The beloved story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be coming to Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre starting on March 28, 2017. Roald Dahl’s classic tale of Charlie and Willy Wonka has been delighting audiences for generations.

Willy Wonka, the inventor of the Everlasting Gobstopper, has announced that his factory will be inviting guests for a tour. A group of children win golden tickets that entitle them to visit the factory. The group includes Charlie Bucket and others. They journey through Willy Wonka’s world of imagination, chocolate waterfalls, and Oompa-Loompas.

Cast and Creative Team

The role of Willy Wonka will be played by two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle. He won his first Tony in 2012 for Peter and the Starcatcher and won again for his performance as William Shakespeare in Something Rotten! in 2015. Borle also appeared in Legally Blonde, Broadway productions of Mary Poppins and Spamalot, and Smash, The Sound of Music Live!, and Peter Pan Live! on television. Borle will star in a revival of Falsettos in the fall before taking on the role of Willy Wonka.

The play will be directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien. The book was written by internationally renowned playwright David Greig. The lyrics were written by Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The music was written by Shaiman. The play is choreographed by Joshua Bergasse.

The scenery and costumes will be designed by Mark Thompson. Lighting will be designed by Japhy Weideman, puppets will be designed by Basil Twist, and orchestrations will be done by Doug Besterman.

Previous Productions

The story was first performed in a film in 1971. It was called Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and starred Gene Wilder. Tim Burton directed a 2005 remake called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp.

The stage musical was first performed in May 2013 at London’s Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on the West End. It received generally positive reviews.
