Looks like Beetlejuice’s Julliard training has finally paid off!

The beloved character of Beetlejuice, who delighted theatergoers in a film with the same name in 1988, will soon be coming to Broadway. A Beetlejuice adaptation is currently in the works and is expected to make its debut on Broadway in the 2018-2019 season.

The Beetlejuice musical will be produced by Warner Bros. and directed by Alex Timbers, who is known for his previous work on Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. Other details about the upcoming Broadway production are not currently available.

The Story of Beetlejuice

The film version of Beetlejuice, which was directed by Tim Burton, tells the story of a couple, Barbara and Adam Maitland, who live in a country home in Connecticut. They die in a car accident and return to their home, where the Deetz family soon moves in. The Maitlands consult the Handbook for the Recently Deceased and seek help from Beetlejuice, a self-described “bio-exorcist,” to scare away the Deetzes. The film starred Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Jones.

One of the most famous scenes in the Beetlejuice movie is a choreographed dance routine involving several characters who are forced by spirits to dance along to a recording of Harry Belafonte’s “Banana Boat Song.” Details about the plot of the upcoming Broadway play are not available, but it will surely include many of the same characters who delighted audiences in Tim Burton’s film.

Alex Timbers’ Other Projects

Timbers has also worked on Mozart in the Jungle, The Pee-Wee Herman Show, and Here Lies Love, a musical involving David Byrne and Fat Boy Slim. He was recently replaced as the director of the musical adaptation of the Disney musical Frozen. Timber is currently directing a workshop of St. Joan, David Byrne’s musical about Joan of Arc, at the Public Theater.
