This year’s Tony Award nominees are notable for two reasons. Eight of the nominees are making their Broadway debuts, and another four are stage veterans who have appeared in several productions but have just received their first nominations. These four are all appearing in plays produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company.
Jessica Lange
Jessica Lange has received a Tony nomination for her performance as Mary Tyrone in the revival of Eugene O’Neill’s play Long Day’s Journey Into Night. She played the same role 16 years ago in London and said in an interview with Playbill that she always wanted to return to the part. Lange is known for her previous performances on Broadway as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire and as Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. She has also starred recently on television in American Horror Story.
Michael Shannon
Michael Shannon plays the role of Mary Tyrone’s son, James Tyrone Jr., in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Shannon has had a 20-year career in theater. He told Playbill he decided to take on the role for sentimental reasons. His father enjoyed O’Neill’s work and used to watch his plays on Broadway in the 1960s.
David Furr
David Furr has received a Tony nod for his portrayal of Garry Lejeune in a revival of Noises Off. He has appeared in a total of six Broadway plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest, which was produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company in 2011. He said he has always wanted to perform in this play and that he is excited to be nominated for a role that he enjoyed playing so much.
Megan Hilty
New Tony Award nominee Megan Hilty starred alongside Furr in Noises Off, playing the role of Brooke Ashton. She had leading roles in two musicals previously, as Doralee in 9 to 5 and as Glinda in Wicked. She said the nomination reinforces her feeling that she belongs as a member of the Broadway community.
