Disney Theatrical Productions announced on March 18 that seven of the principal actors who star in the Broadway adaptation of Aladdin have extended their contracts. The list includes Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the role of the Genie. He has extended his contract through February 2017.
The other actors who have extended their contracts are Adam Jacobs, who plays the role of Aladdin; Jonathan Freeman, who plays Jafar; Courtney Reed, who plays Jasmine; Brian Gonzalez in the role of Babkak; Clifton Davis, who plays the Sultan; and Don Darryl Rivera in the role of Iago.
Aladdin is a musical adaptation of the 1992 film that starred Robin Williams. The show has been performed at the New Amsterdam Theatre since it opened in March 2014 and has received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography. The show has received positive reviews from critics and is one of the highest-grossing musicals currently being performed on Broadway.
The theatrical version includes several songs that Alan Menken wrote for the film, including “Friend Like Me,” “Prince Ali,” and “A Whole New World.” The late Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Chad Beguelin wrote the lyrics. Beguelin also wrote the book for the musical.
James Monroe Iglehart won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical in 2014 for his performance in the role of the Genie in Aladdin. He also won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured actor in a Musical for the same role that year. He was nominated for three Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards in 2014.
David Ng of the Los Angeles Times described Iglehart’s performance in Aladdin this way: “’Aladdin’ has made Iglehart a Broadway star and earned him his first Tony Award nomination, for featured actor in a musical. As the genie, he serves as the show’s exuberant comic engine, performing an array of high-impact musical numbers and calorie-burning comic set pieces.”
Iglehart also appeared in the role of Coriolanus Burt on an episode of “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” which aired on Netflix. The series was created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
